Inside the Numbers: DAFV - Top Pitchers

Francisco Liriano: Gone, but not forgotten.

Like legendary Sabermatrician Bill James before him, Scott "Daddy" English is doing some great work with statistics. He's hard at work on his Postseason Prospect Report. I don't want to give too much away, but rest assured your World Champion MattroStars don't appear to be getting bad anytime soon. In the meantime, he'll be aiding these team previews with some great stat work. While you're waiting, here's a quick peek at the top pitchers from 2006, according to Daddy's Analysis of Fantasy Value (DAFV):

Top Fantasy Pitchers Per Inning
  1. Francisco Liriano, Min (Jackrabbits)
  2. Johan Santana, Min (DLB)
  3. Scott Kazmir, TB (Herzogs)
  4. Ben Sheets, Mil (DLB)
  5. Roger Clemens, Hou (MattroStars)
  6. C.C. Sabathia, Cle (DLB)
  7. Chris Carpenter, StL (Lynchmob)
  8. Jered Weaver, LAA (Slum Lords)
  9. Jake Peavy, SD (Lynchmob)
  10. Cole Hamels, Phi (Jackrabbits)
Top Fantasy Pitchers Per Start
  1. Francisco Liriano, Min (Jackrabbits)
  2. Johan Santana, Min (DLB)
  3. C.C. Sabathia, Cle (DLB)
  4. Chris Carpenter, StL (Lynchmob)
  5. Brandon Webb, Ari (Jackrabbits)
  6. Aaron Harang, Cin (Satanists)
  7. Jered Weaver, LAA (Slum Lords)
  8. Ben Sheets, Mil (DLB)
  9. John Smoltz, Atl (MattroStars)
  10. Scott Kazmir, TB (Herzogs)
What does all this tell us? Well, one common theme throughout this analysis has been that two teams are much better than their seasons indicated last year -- Daddy's Little Boys and, yes Cooper, get ready for a season of trash talking, the Jackrabbits. The DLB dealt with quite a number of injuries last year, especially with Sheets. And they still had a good season. The Rabbits were as unlucky as a team could get last year. They led the league in HR, RBI and slugging percentage, as well as ERA and strikeouts. Losing Liriano for the year obviously hurts, but with a full season of Hamels, Rich Hill and Matt Garza on the horizon, they should still be plenty tough.

Seeing pictures of Liriano is depressing. We'll be strong this year, but if we had him we'd be ridiculous. Looking forward to seeing the prospect report.

I should note that the rankings are adjusted so that wins / saves are not included. This is to make the ranking irrespective of the team the pitcher is on and put them on a level playing field. But obviously they are on different teams so some weight will be added for that in my final rankings.
