Did AC's playoff hopes just go Boof?

Not sure what that sign forebodes, but Boof doesn't look happy.

John Breig and AC Slater made a big splash Tuesday, sending Gun Show SP Chris Capuano to Hells Kitchen Herzogs for Twins SP Boof Bonser and a first-round pick, No. 9 overall. The 28-year-old Brewers lefty was the 22nd-best starting pitcher last year, ahead of names like Barry Zito, Brett Myers and Dontrelle Willis. Capuano tied for the league lead in quality starts last season (6 innings pitched, allowing 3 runs or less), accomplishing the feat in an impressive 25 of his 34 starts. His 221-1/3 innings pitched were 10th best in baseball last season, which saw him produce a line of 11-12 with a 4.02 ERA and 172 Ks.

For this, the Gun Show get 25-year-old Boof Bonser and the No. 9 overall pick. At face value the deal may look bad, but if Boof performs like he did last year (7-6, 4.23 ERA, 83 K in 100-1/3 IP) he's not all that different from Capuano -- just three years younger. Tack on what should be a decent prospect at the No. 9 spot and it doesn't look quite as bad. That, of course, is assuming Boof maintains his performance in his second run through the league.

With the trade the Herzogs add a much-needed starter to their rotation. After the fragile Scott Kazmir and Jason Schmidt, the best the 'Zogs have to offer is Cliff Lee, Ted Lilly, Noah Lowry and Jake Westbrook, making the deal a no-brainer for Cooper.

Trade 1: Escobar & Mora -for- Marte, Petit & G. Floyd. Marte and Petit have time, but so far it's not looking good.

Trade 2: JD Drew -for- Billy Butler. Remains to be seen, but Drew was a top-30 OF last year and will (likely) be in Boston's lineup next year.

Trade 3: Swisher & Fuentes -for- Arroyo, M.Gonzalez, Tracy. Arroyo kept it up, but I think I'd rather have Swisher, Fuentes (and Capuano for that matter).

Actually, this deal isnt quite as bad as I first thought. In the rankings I'm compiling Capuano came in at #41 whereas Boof came in at #52. However, the difference between Boof & Cappy is the same as the difference between Cappy & Harden/Bonderman. So, while I still think the deal favors Cooper its not an awful deal for AC.

PS - I am having the same sign-on problems. The site never remembers me.

It all depends on the prospects. I am mortgaging it all on 5 or 6 guys to be studs. If they all become average, I will be in the crapper for a long time. If 3 or 4 of them become stars or at least above average, then i get get some things done.

I want a stable of sp's. I am working toward having 9 good sp's to choose from in any given week. This gives me a lot of quality 2 start chances and i think is the formula for a dynasty.

It's a long way to go, but it is possible and i think the only way to make money.
