It could have been worse. He could have been
dropped by the Blunted Stophers.
Greg Heck and the Bashful Satanists made a splash on the first day of cuts, dropping veteran Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, as well as Mets backstop Paul Lo Duca. The moves leave the team with just one catcher, Rockies' rookie Chris Iannetta. For anyone that has witnessed the slew of catching prospects Colorado has paraded out there over the past few years, you'll know this move carries some risk. Iannetta's .260/.370/.390, 2 HR, 10 RBI debut in 77 at-bats last year is underwhelming, but his .321/.418/.622, 11 HR, 26 RBI performance in 177 AA at-bats last year, is anything but. Still, a bit risky.
The 35-year-old Varitek hit just .238/.325/.400 with 12 HR, 51 RBI, due in part to a knee injury that required surgery. That said, he hits in one of the most potent lineups in baseball, and is just one season removed from a .281/.366/.489, 22 HR, 70 RBI campaign -- good for second-best in fantasy baseball. At the very least, you'd think he'd be a good throw-in to help get a trade done. The move could make for an interesting decision for some teams come Draft Day. The T-Baggers, AC's Gun Show, Blunted Stophers, Lynchmob -- or even the Satanists -- might consider the two-time all-star for insurance if their guy isn't available at their second pick.

Speaking of catchers, what are the odds that the E-Balls have Johjima and Posada all year long? Better yet, what's the over-under for the number of times Johjima is their utility player?
Satanist GM Greg Heck's statement: "As the Satanists look to build for the future, we wanted to let Mr. Varitek get one last shot at a championship before his storied career comes to an end. We thought we would miss his presence and leadership around the clubhouse, but then we realized that THIS IS JUST FANTASY BASEBALL! THERE IS NO CLUBHOUSE! As for the lack of success among young Colorado catchers, we acknowledge that and say that none of them were Tar Heels like Chris Iannetta. We have complete confidence in Chris' ability to handle our staff and didn't feel that he should have to look over his shoulder all season."
