40-somethings find a home

Yes, that's David Wells with Meat Loaf. Insert your own joke here.

After picking up Padres starter David Wells for his two starts next week, the MattroStars believe they have a record number of 40-somethings on their roster. Six current Stars are 40-years-old or above: Wells (44), Randy Johnson (43), Kenny Rogers (42), Greg Maddux (41), Tim Wakefield (40) and John Smoltz (40).

"Pitchers are pitching effectively later into their careers," said MattroStars owner Matt Grisafi. "When you've got 6 pitchers on the DL, you have to replace them. We're trying to win now and these guys are still giving us good innings.

"The downside is the post-game talent pool has dropped off a bit, I mean you all saw the girls Huston [Street] was with the other week. Not having Mauer Power on the road trips has something to do with that too. Hopefully it will pick up soon, I don't know if I can take another couple weeks of Ichiro's leftovers."
