Heck’s completely scientific season preview/analysis by position
THIRD BASEMEN
Apologies for the delay.
Sometimes life gets in the way of Fantasy Baseball. Pisses me off. Now that Opening Day is behind us, I’ll try to
speed through the rest of the positions…
#1 – DADDY’S LITTLE
BOYS – Miguel Cabrera, DET – 100 POINTS
As third basemen go, there’s reigning MVP and Triple Crown
winner Cabrera, and then there’s everyone else.
No other position has such a dropoff from #1 to #2, as you’re about to
see…

#2 – ELEPHANT BALLS –
David Wright, NYM – 82.45 POINTS
Egads! A 113 point
difference in projections from Cabrera to Wright. Fascinating!
Anyway, David is tasked with being “The Man” on the Mets this year. Actually, he’s pretty much “The ONLY
Man”. We’ll see if that might impact his
numbers by the end of the year…

#3 – T-BAGGERS – Evan
Longoria, TAM – 80.68 POINTS
Longo gets dinged by the computers for durability issues,
but many are predicting a major breakout year for the Tampa stud. Also has one of the hottest WAGs in the MLB
(Jamie Edmondson) so that should count for something…

#4 – JACKRABBITS –
Chase Headley, SDG – 77.30 POINTS
The projections believe in Chase’s breakout 2012 campaign,
but…whoops. Headley’s out for the first
4 weeks or so with a thumb. Won’t be
until May that we see if Chase is the real deal for 2013…

#5 – MATTROSTARS –
Adrian Beltre, TEX – 75.75 POINTS
Beltre turns 34 on Sunday, but his past 3 years have been
among the 4 best seasons of his career.
The projections only see a small dropoff for the Rangers’ third sacker…

#6 – LIMERICK
LYNCHMOB – Ryan Zimmerman, WAS – 75.03 POINTS
Another guy with durability issues, Zimmerman (when healthy)
has been the foundation upon which the Nationals have been built. Now he can blend in with a balanced lineup
and drive in runs with impunity…

#7 – ISOTOPES –
Aramis Ramirez, MIL – 73.07 POINTS
My least favorite of the Three Musketeers, Aramis had the
best season of his career (5.8 fWAR) in 2012, his first with the Brewers. He turns 35 this season…how much does he have
left in the tank?

#8 – BASHFUL
SATANISTS – Martin Prado, ARI – 71.50 POINTS
Prado does a lot of the little things that help his real
life baseball teams win games. He doesn’t
do a whole hell of lot to help my fantasy team win games, but he rarely puts up
a terrible week either…

#9 – THE H TREE – Brett
Lawrie, TOR – 70.55 POINTS
After a lot of hype before the 2012 season, Lawrie had a
pretty mediocre year (feels like I said the same thing about the H Tree’s first
baseman already…). The computers believe
he’ll bounce back and go on to a solid major league career…

season of fewer than 120 games played.
When you’re 5’11”, 240 pounds (maybe!), these things will happen. Somebody get this boy some tofu!

#11 – ROCKBUSTERS – Kyle
Seager, SEA – 69.05 POINTS
Seager’s sneaky good season was helped by the fact that he
made 651 trips to the plate. This is an
accomplishment in itself, but an OPS of .739 isn’t going to lead to many more
650 PA seasons if there are other viable alternatives in the Seattle system…

#12 – NORRIS SLUM
LORDS – Michael Young, PHI – 64.70 POINTS
Young held off Kevin Youkilis according to the projections
because, let’s face it – without the facial hair, Youk is doomed. Young is looking to shake off his career
worst 2012 campaign and help the aging Phillies make one more run…

#13 – HELLS KITCHEN
HERZOGS – Will Middlebrooks, BOS – 64.29 POINTS
Middlebrooks, Boston’s third baseman of the future, slugged
a lusty .509 in 75 games last year, with 15 bombs after never hitting more than
20 homers in a full season in the minors before. The computers say “Do it again, rook.”

#14 – SNAPDRAGONS – Manny
Machado, BAL – 60.11 POINTS
Machado, one of the top rated prospects in baseball prior to
last season, made the jump from AA ball and held his own for 51 games, posting
a .739 OPS. The computers are bullish on
his future, but at only 20 years old, big production will most likely be a
couple more years down the road…
