Heck's Preview - Shortstops

Heck’s completely scientific season preview/analysis by position

Cole said "Jump" so I said "How high?"

SHORTSTOPS

#1 – JACKRABBITS – Jose Reyes, TOR – 100 POINTS
Will be interesting to see how the move to the AL will impact Jose after spending his entire career to date in the NL East.  The computer models seem to think he’ll do just fine, as you see here…

#2 – ISOTOPES – Starlin Castro, CHC – 96.28 POINTS
Pretty much everyone on this list has some warts.  Some bigger than others.  Castro just turned 23 on Sunday, so perhaps the projections see room for improvement, but an OPS of .753 in your 3rd year as a major leaguer isn’t exactly cause for celebration…

#3 – DADDY’S LITTLE BOYS – Troy Tulowitzki, COL – 92.57 POINTS
And here we have the old durability problem again.  On a per at-bat basis, Tulo is easily the high man on this list.  But the computers can’t give him credit for staying healthy…can you blame them?

#4 – ROCKBUSTERS – Elvis Andrus, TEX – 91.88 POINTS
And now Elvis Andrus, who has actually never had a wRC+ of 100 or better (meaning he’s never been league average or above in weighted runs created)…and he’s ranked #4 on the list???  Man, the SS position isn’t what it once was…

#5 – SNAPDRAGONS – Hanley Ramirez, LAD – 91.08 POINTS
What to expect of Hanley this year?  The one-time #1 overall value in fantasy has barely been above league average for the past two campaigns, and now he’s going to miss 6-8 weeks with a thumb.  The projections (all but CBS, it appears) were made before that happened, so he lands here…

#6 – BASHFUL SATANISTS – Jimmy Rollins, PHI – 91.05 POINTS
The Satanists’ #1 pick in the expansion draft is still going strong, though not quite producing the MVP numbers of 6 years ago.  Jimmy had a strong 2012 season, but the projections don’t see him maintaining that level of play in his age 34 year…

#8 – HELLS KITCHEN HERZOGS – Ian Desmond, WAS – 88.70 POINTS
Ian Desmond has two first names.  I don’t trust anyone with two first names.  Thus, I sure don’t trust the idea that Desmond is going to hit 25 bombs again in 2013 after having 22 in his 2+ season career previously…

Whoooooosh!  Did you feel that?  Yep, Danny Espinosa just struck out again.  28.7% of Espinosa’s plate appearances ended in a strikeout last year.  Egads!  Almost makes Ryan Howard look like a contact hitter.  Almost…

#10 – NORRIS SLUM LORDS – Josh Rutledge, COL – 83.73 POINTS
Expectations for Rutledge appear to be all over the map.  I’ve seen predictions of his demotion within 2 months, and I’ve seen predictions that he’ll be a top 10 SS this year.  Who the F knows, honestly?

#11 – ELEPHANT BALLS – Derek Jeter, NYY – 79.11 POINTS
Oh captain my captain!!!  Jeter still hasn’t fully recovered from the brutal broken ankle he suffered in last year’s playoffs, and he’s old.  He’s defied the critics for the past few years, but can he get up off the mat one last time?

#12 – BROOKLYN BLUNTED B – J.J. Hardy, BAL – 77.47 POINTS
The Blunted have good depth in mediocre shortstops, owning both JJ Hardy and Erick Aybar.  Sounds like another chance at platoon mismanagement for Sal’s crew!

#13 – LIMERICK LYNCHMOB – Marco Scutaro, SF – 75.51 POINTS
Ah, Marco.  Playoff hero and WBC participant for the upstart Eye-talian team, the computers don’t think much of his chances to live up to the 3 year, $20MM contract he signed in the offseason.  Gotta love the Giants, making sure they keep the band together…

Known as a defensive wiz (possibly the best in the game), Simmons had a surprisingly effective rookie season at the plate.  The computers are not fully buying in yet – we’ll see what Simmons can do to change their minds in 2013…
