Apparently this isn't the same guy from the Real World AIDS season,
but it wouldn't at all surprise me if he was -- he is a Pirate after all.
From Daddy's Desk:
I know its very early yet and more trades are sure to happen. But, I wanted to do a little mock draft to kill some time before I have to start doing actual work. So, please find a 2nd round mock draft with MLB GM comparisons for the Friday viewing pleasure.
ROUND 1
1. The Snapdragons (Jack Zduriencik, Brewers) – Pedro Alvarez, 3B/Pirates – The Snappers go for the top bat available. If all goes as planned, Alvarez should be in the majors by the end of 2009.
2. The H Tree (Andy MacPhail, Orioles) – Brian Matsuz, SP/Orioles – Lots of ways the Trees could go here but ultimately you need pitching to win in this league so Sweet Pete takes the top pitching prospect available.
3. T-Baggers (from AC's Gun Show) (Jon Daniels, Rangers) – Justin Smoak – 1B/Rangers – After years of rebuilding the T-Baggers finally looked primed to contend with one of the best staffs in the league. With pitching taken care of they go with another top bat from the 2008 MLB draft that should move quickly through the minors.
4. Elephant Balls (Brian Sabean, Giants) – Shin-Soo Choo – OF/Indians – With a load of aging OFs and a lot of uncertainty in 2009, the E-Balls grab the MLB OF with the most upside available. Could this be akin to the Slum Lords Holliday pick a few years back? Choo quietly put up a .946 OPS last season and is now 2 years out from Tommy John surgery so the possibility is there.
5. Daddy's Little Boys (from Slum Lords) (Mark Shapiro, Indians) – Tim Beckham – SS/Devil Rays – While they have needs at 2B & 3B, this is a bit early to take one of the MLB free agents that are available so Daddy goes with the player labeled as BJ Upton Jr. There is also a good chance this picked gets traded.
6. Bashful Satanists (Walt Jocketty, Reds) – Buster Posey – C/Giants – The Satanists have methodically built their team to the point where they were primed to make the playoffs last year before a late season collapse. One hole on the team is catcher and Posey will eventually plug that hole.
7. T-Baggers – Gordon Beckham – 2B-SS/White Sox – The T-Baggers need help at both middle infield and closer, but closers are volatile and at this point its tough to pass up on the top middle infield prospect available.
8. Limerick Lynchmob (Frank Wren, Braves) - Kenshin Kawakami – SP/Braves – The ‘mob made it through the expansion draft in pretty decent shape, all the team really needs is depth in its staff. Kawakami, who’s been compared to Kuroda, helps add some quality depth to the ‘mobs staff.
9. Brooklyn F-ing Blunted B (Ed Wade, Astros) – Heath Bell – RP/Padres – Oh sweet irony. In need of more certainty at closer the Blunted B go for the reliever they previously traded their 2nd round pick for and then dropped. So this makes it a 1st and 2nd for Heath Bell. Nice work Ed.
10. AC's Gun Show (from Slum Lords, Isotopes) (Jim Bowden, Nationals) – Micheal Ynoa – SP/A’s – After their complete roster destruction in 2008, the Gun Show are starting back at square one. No pitcher available offers the upside of Ynoa (yes, it is Ynoa and not Inoa) and the Gun Show certainly have time to wait for the 17 year old to develop.
11. Norris Slum Lords (from Jackrabbits) (Dan O’Dowd, Rockies) – Elvis Andrus – SS/Rangers – In 2008 the Slum Lords decided to take a step back in order to attempt to make the leap forward from .500 squad to playoff team. Andrus, a player often compared to a young Edgar Renteria may struggle at first but should solidify the Lords SS spot for years to come.
12. MattroStars (Billy Beane, A's) – Brett Wallace – 3B/Cardinals – Mattro is excited to be able to nab the last close to MLB ready bat from the 2008 draft. This gives him a solid back-up plan if Atkins falls off the preverbal map after leaving Colorado next year.
13. Norris Slum Lords (from DLB) – Jeremy Hermida – OF/Marlins – With JD Drew being a health risk and no one knowing what Denard Span will do in 2009, the Lords grab a player that always seems to be on the verge of breaking out. Despite 3 years in the majors, Hermida is still only 25 and the Lords take a calculated risk that his breakout will finally come this season.
14. Hells Kitchen Herzogs (Dave Dombrowski, Tigers) – David Purcey – SP/Blue Jays – The ‘Zogs love their SP depth strategy and despite having Adam LaRoche and Carlos Delgado at 1B decide to go with a nice upside play here. Purcey was once a top prospect who’s star fell after some struggles in 2006 & 2007. However, a nice year last year (2.69 ERA, 1.12 WHIP in AAA) coupled with injuries to McGowan and Marcum means Purcey will be in the Blue Jays rotation.
ROUND 2
15. The Snapdragons – Aaron Poreda – SP/White Sox – After grabbing Alvarez at #1 overall, the Snappers will want to go with pitching here and Poreda is both good and close to MLB ready. At the very least he’ll make for good trade bait for a team looking for a young upside arm.
16. The H Tree - Eric Hosmer – 1B/Royals – Conversely, the Trees went with the top SP prospect in round 1 so they change direction here and go with a big upside bat in Hosmer. He’s young but the boy can hit and will help make for a good start to the Tree’s farm system along with Matsuz.
17. Limerick Lynchmob (from AC's Gun Show) – Mike Gonzalez – RP/Braves – This isn’t really a position of need for the ‘mob, but it’s hard to pass up on a closer with Gonzalez’s upside at this point. At the very least he represents a good insurance policy on Valverde & Ryan and also makes for a nice piece of trade bait.
18. Elephant Balls – Mike Jacobs – 1B/Royals – The E-Balls fill their void at first with big swinging Jacobs. While he has his shortcomings he does hit homeruns and at this point in his career he is what he is. And in this draft that’s the top MLB 1B available.
19. Bashful Satanists (from MattroStars, Slum Lords) – Joey Devine – RP/A’s – While he’s not officially the closer right now there is heavy speculation that he will be by the end of the year. And, with the new holds scoring category, he may be a worthwhile start even as a set-up man due to his high K rates. With a shaky closer situation (Sherrill & Lyon), the Satanists jump at the chance to add depth to the position.
20. Bashful Satanists – Edwin Encarnacion – 3B/Reds – With Glaus out until midseason and Fields hardly a proven commodity, the Satanists take a chance on Encarnacion as their 3B to start the year. Edwin has shown flashes of brilliance along with a lot of mediocrity. The potential upside makes him worth the risk here.
21. T-Baggers – Joel Hanrahan – RP/Nationals – Eric and Erik release from their tight embrace and let out of sigh of relief as ignoring closers with their two first round picks works out. Hanrahan is hardly a top closer, but he’s got no real competition on the Nationals and should be able to rack up 25-30 saves and be a decent #2 RP.
22. Limerick Lynchmob – Randy Wolf – SP/Dodgers – The ‘mob look to further add to their needed pitching depth and go with the solid (when healthy) Wolf. He’s on a one year deal and is pitching for a contract again so if he can stay healthy he’ll be a nice addition to the ‘mob’s staff.
23. Isotopes (from Brooklyn Blunted) (Jim Hendry) – Mike Napoli – C/Angels – Finally the big talkin’ ‘Topes get to make their first choice. Teagarden is a rookie and far from a sure thing as a fantasy catcher so Rock gets a nice insurance policy in Napoli who many feel is primed for a bit of a breakout. The Blunted B’s Heath Bell for Heath Bell and Mike Napoli deal is now complete.
24. Isotopes – Jeff Franceour – OF/Braves – The ‘Topes really can’t go into the year with an OF of Hamilton, Either & Swisher, can they? After seeing his stock fall to the point he was demoted to AA last year, Frenchy is determined to make a comeback. It remains to be seen if that determination will help him lay off the curveball in the dirt however.
25. Jackrabbits (Josh Byrnes) – Carlos Santana – C/Indians – The ‘Rabbits love their prospects and end the run of non-prospect picks. While they could use depth at both SP & RP the quality just isn’t there so they jump at the chance to grab Santana whom the Indians stole from the Dodgers in the Casey Blake deal last year. Santana looks to be a good offensive catcher who should be up in late 2009 or 2010.
26. MattroStars – Jose Arredondo – RP/Angels – Arredondo offers insurance should anything happen to Fuentes who’s lost his closers role before and, like Devine, his K rates make him the type of set-up man that would be worth starting with the new holds scoring. Not the kind of pick the Mattrostars want to make as they could’ve had Arredondo for a 3rd round pick a month ago, but a smart pick nonetheless.
27. T-Baggers (from DLB) – Mark DeRosa – 3B/Indians – Not a flashy pick but DeRosa rounds out the T-Baggers offensive team with his 2B eligibility this year. He’s not a top 10 2B or the long term answer for the Baggers but he’ll be a “solid veteran” that won’t hurt them.
28. Hells Kitchen Herzogs – Matt Harrison – SP/Rangers – The 2nd round closes out with another young SP with moderate upside pick by the defending champs. Harrison sports decent stuff with good control for a young pitcher. With a lot of people picking the Rangers to contend this year he could have a nice season fantasy wise.
